A mad rush for Jeremy Lin jerseys and merchandise is now underway following the sudden impact he has had.

In his second NBA season, Lin finally earned his first against Utah in an early February game. The former Harvard player scored 28 pointes in his start and totaled 89 combined points in his first three starts. That total marked an NBA record that dates back to the 1976-77 NBA-ABA merger.

The success was not expected considering his humble NBA beginnings. As a matter of fact, Lin has been sleeping on the sofa of a teammate. One must do that instead of living in a posh New York condo when you’re not sure how long you’ll have a job.

Lin’s rise to stardom has gained an international spotlight because he is the first American player of Chinese or Taiwanese dissent to play in the NBA. Adding to the story is the fact that Lin was relatively unoticed by most NBA pundits.

The sudden Knicks star was not selected in the 2010 NBA Draft, but signed a contract with the Golden State Warriors. Although he earned limited playing time, he was released by the Warriors. The Houston Rockets picked him up before the 2011/12 season tipped off, but sent Lin packing as well. Lin was then offered a contract by the Knicks to compete for a backup guard position.

Because of the magic he’s displayed on the court, it appears that Lin may soon have enough job security to warrant better sleeping conditions that a sofa. It’s a developing rags to riches story that has only just begun.

When the New York Giants take the field for Super Bowl XLVI, Eli Manning will be playing for his second Super Bowl trophy. The Super bowl rematch from four years ago will be played in the stadium unofficially known as “the house that Peyton Manning built.”

When comparing the NFL careers of Eli and Peyton Manning, the youngest (Eli) has always been the understudy. Peyton, who many regard as one of the best NFL QBs of all time, has been in the league longer, has been more consistent and has four NFL MVP awards. However, if you’re operating in the “what have you done for me lately department,” Eli is making strides to surpass his brother’s NFL achievements.

Heading into the 2011 season, the mere thought of mentioning Eli as more of an elite quarterback that Peyton would have likely generated laughter. However with Peyton having to sit out the season with an injury, Eli has generated surprsing headlines with his stellar play down the final stretch of the season.

Here are some of the bullet points Eli has recently accomplished. By leading the Giants to an NFC Championship game win over San Francisco, Eli set an NFL record as being the first quarterback to lead a team to five road playoff wins. He has also tied his brother in Super Bowl appearances.

If the youngest Manning is able to lift the Giants past the Patriots on February 5th, Eli will have two Super Bowl rings comparded to Peyton. A victory on Super Sunday would also boost Eli’s Super Bowl record to 2-0 compared to Peyton’s current 1-1 mark. With a win over the Patriots, Eli would likely win MVP honors for the game. With that achievement, Eli would have two Super Bowl MVP’s compared to Peyton’s one.

Heading into the announcement of the Pro Football Hall of Fame 2012 class, USC has sent more former players to be enshrined in Canton, Ohio than any other school. With former stars such as Frank Gifford and Marcus Allen, 11 former Trojans have made it to the Hall.

However, Notre Dame is right on USC’s heels in producing elite NFL players and the Fighting Irish have 10 former players with their bust in Canton. With the announcement of the finalist for 2012 induction, two former Notre Dame players are on the list. The duo consists of Tim Brown and Jerome Bettis. If both of these former Irish stars make the 2012 class, then Notre Dame will be the University with the most Hall of Famers.

Other top schools with finalist include Ohio State who ranks fourth in this category. If Chris Carter is elected to the Hall, then they’ll be tied with Michigan for third place. The University of Pittsburgh has six former Panthers in the Hall. However Pitt has two 2012 finalist in the form of Chris Doleman and Curtis Martin. The election of those two would likely vault Pitt to a tie for third place.

The AFC’s Houston Texas are playoff bound for the first time after winning the AFC South Division. However injuries have greatly impacted this team that has limped into the playoffs. The Cincinnati Bengals are the other playoff team that’s yet to post a winning score on a Super Bowl scoreboard. With rookie QB Andy Dalton and a wildcard position, the Bengals face long odds in their championship goals. The franchiese has punched Super Bowl tickets in the 1981 and 1988 seasons.

Lavasier Tuinei was an offensive force at the receiving position as he led all Ducks in receptions with eight catches for 158 yards and 2 TD’s. Oregon QB Darron Thomas added additional fireworks with 268 passing yards and 3 touchdown passes.

While Wisconsin also generated strong yardage with their 35 points scored, Oregon owned the scoreboard in the 4th quarter. The Ducks outscored the Badgers 10-0 in the game’s final stanza.

However 2010 Heisman Winner Cam Newton has evaded the jinx and many would be tacklers with a sensational 2011 NFL rookie season that almost assuredly will land him 2011 AP NFL Offensive ROY honors. The terms Heisman and rookie of the year are seldom mentioned in the same breath. Only seven Heisman winners have gone on to achieve ROY status. Charles Woodson was the last one to accomplish the feat after entering the NFL as an Oakland Raider in 1998.

Newton came into the league with high expectations after being selected by the Carolina Panthers with the number one overall selection of the 2011 NFL Draft. The former Auburn Tiger has helped the franchise gain footing while also exciting fans with his flamboyant style. Newton has been a record breaker as well, having surpassed Peyton Manning’s rookie passing yards record while also rushing for more TD’s than any other QB in NFL history.
