University of Wisconsin Football Facts and History

Wisconsin first began playing football in 1889 going 0-2 in their initial
season. Fortunes improved rapidly when the university took the field the
next season and thumped Wisconsin-Whitewater 106-0.
The Wisonsin vs. Minnesota rivalry began in 1890. The annual battle is
the most played rivalry in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
When the Big 10 Conference was formed in 1896, Wisconsin was the
leagues first champion after posting a 7-1-1 record.
Wisconsin's first bowl game: 1952 Rose Bowl where the Badgers fell to
USC 7-0.
Most wins by a UW head coach: Barry Alavarez (1990-2005) earned 118
coaching victories while leading the Badgers football program.
Wisconsin Heisman Trophy winners: The UW program has produced
two players that have hoisted college football's top individual award. Alan
Ameche won the Heisman in 1953 and Ron Dayne ran for the Heisman
in 1999.
University of Wisconsin former players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame:
Arnie Herber, Elroy Hirsch and Mike Webster.
Wisconsin Badgers retired football jersey numbers: While the movie
titled "The Summer of '42" was a big hit nationally, Wisconsin fans fondly
remember the fall of that year. Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch ran reckless for
the No.3 ranked Badgers while Dave Schreiner was named the Westem
Conference player of the year. Hirsch's No. 40 and Schreiner's No. 80
jersey are both retired.

Wisconsin Badgers Rose Bowl Bound
Again!

The last time that UW fans had the opportunity to wear
Badgers Rose Bowl apparel followed the 1999 season
when Barry Alvarez's team defeated Stanford 17-9. This
year's squad earned the right to make the trip to
Pasadena by being the top ranked Big 10 team in the
BCS Standings.

First appearance: 1952 season, a 7-0 loss to
USC.
First victory: Following the 1993 season, a 21-
16 win over UCLA.
Most consecutive appearances: (2) following
the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
Last appearance: 2011, following the 2010
season.
Overall Badgers Rose Bowl record: 3-4
