University of Utah Football Facts and History

Nickname: The University carries the Utes Nickname proudly. It is derived from the
Ute tribe of the Native Americans.
Stadium: The Utes have played their home games at Rice-Eccles Stadium since
1927. Most of the stadium was demolished for renovation in 1997 as Salt Lake City
prepared to host the 2002 Winter Olympics.
BCS Conference Bound: The Utes will begin play in the Pac-10 Conference in 2011.
Utah joins that conference after having great success in the Mountain West
Conference. Previous conference affiliations for the university include the WAC
Conference, Skyline Conference, Big Seven Conference and the Rocky Mountain
Athletic Conference.
First Bowl Game: The Utes played in their first Bowl game following the 1938
season. Under the direction of Head Coach Ike Armstrong, Utah defeated New
Mexico 26-0 in the Sun Bowl.
First BCS Bowl: Despite playing in a Non-AQ BCS league, the University received an
invitation to play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl following the 2008 season. Head Coach
Kyle Whittingham's undefeated squad beat Alabama 31-17. Utah finished the
season as the #2 ranked team in the major polls.
