July 15--Fox Sports overview of NFL Quarterbacks

Heading into the 2007 season, Fox Sports has ranked the QB units for
the 32 NFL teams.  They rank the Ravens as having the ninth best unit
and have Troy Smith backing up Steve McNair and Kyle Boler.  When
specifically addressing smith, Fox Sports assessment is.

"Rookie Troy Smith has all the intangibles but must prove that he is more
than a shotgun-option rollout quarterback."

During
ESPN Draft Day Coverage, the broadcast crew discussed Troy
Smith's draft position and the impact they believe he can make in the NFL.

Ron Jaworski

On Smith making the transition from college to the NFL:  Jaworski has
studied tapes of Troy Smith and says that his very productive collegiate
play should translate well to the NFL.  Jaworski cites Smith's throwing
style that has him throwing off his toes along with over the top delivery.
Those factors according t Jaworski will help Smith to play "taller" than his
6-foot frame would normally allow.
Great pocket movement and his ability to handle the blitz are also strong
attributes for the former Buckeye who also receives accolades for
showing good patience and awareness on the field.

Mel Kiper

Focused on Smiths strong performances for Ohio State in the squads
biggest games.  Excluding the loss against Florida in the 2006 BCS Title
Game, Smith generated wins and dynamic stats in contests against
Michigan, Texas, Notre Dame and more.
Kiper sees great opportunity for Troy Smith in Baltimore due to the aging
Steve McNair and the inconsistent Kyle Boler who may be playing his final
season for the Ravens in 2007.

Chris Mortensen

Indicated that besides Smith's 6-foot size casting doubts on his NFL
potential, character issues that surfaced earlier in Smith's career may
have been somewhat of a factor as well.  However Mortensen said that he
believed that Smith had put the character issue far behind him.

Consensus on his NFL Future

The group agreed that Troy Smith will most likely fit the role of a solid
backup that could likely serve in the year for 8-10 years.  However, with
Smith's selection by the Baltimore Ravens, the uncertainty of that position
with the squad will give Troy Smith ample opportunity to fight for a starting
bid.

Despite a senior season in which he threw for 2,542 yards with 30
touchdowns and only six interceptions, Smith's draft stock plummeted.
He helped Ohio State reach the national championship game in 2006,
but a 4-for-14 effort for only 35 yards against Florida started his downward
spiral.

"I told him, 'You're going to walk in that locker room and you're going to be
a nobody, because we have some Hall of Famers,'" said Ravens' general
manager Ozzie Newsome. "He relished the opportunity to come into the
situation with the players that we have."

Smith is the first Heisman Trophy winner the Ravens have ever drafted.
