Texas A&M Heisman Trophy Winners: John David Crow (1957)
Aggies Head Coach Bear Bryant told
Heisman Voters that if they didn't
give Crow the award, they should do
away with it.
John David Crow won college football’s top individual award in 1957.  One season before his
Heisman crowning, Crow was on the Aggie team that was the first one to beat the Longhorns
at Texas Memorial Stadium.
Crow’s Heisman season was Bear Bryant’s final year at Texas A&M.  He also happens to be
the only Heisman Trophy winner ever coached by the legendary coaching figure.  Although
the Aggies halfback missed some time due to an early season injury, he proved to be a
major force on both sides of the ball.  Crow rushed for 562 yards and 6 TD’s.  He also
passed for 5 scores and caught two passes in his seven games.  From a defensive
perspective, Crow intercepted 5 passes.
Bear Bryant was so adamant that Crow win the Heisman that he told the trophy’s voters that
they should do away with the award if they didn’t select Crow.  Once the voting proved that
Crow had received more Heisman points that Iowa tackle Alex Karras, there was no way to
do away with the award.
Crow was the 2nd player picked in the 1958 NFL Draft and was selected by the Chicago
Cardinals.  Crow’s NFL career lasted 11 seasons and included four Pro Bowl appearances.
The former Aggie star also played for the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers.
Crow’s post NFL career included several coaching stints before he eventually returned to
Texas A&M and became the university’s athletic director.
Texas A&M Aggies Football History & Facts
The Aggies were a charter member of the Southwest Conference when it was formed in 1915.  TA&M competed it that
conference until it was dissolved in 1995.  The university then joined the Big 12 Conference that combined Big 8 and former
SWC schools.
Texas A&M Stadium: Kyle Field has been a complete stadium since 1927, but the land that its built on has actually hosted
Aggies football since 1904.  Kyle Field is the home of the great Aggie tradition, the 12th Man.
Aggies National Championships: The University’s football program lays claim to 4 national championships.  Under the direction
of Head Coach Dana X. Bible, the school was declared to be national champs by numerous organizations following the 1917,
1919 and 1927 seasons.  An undefeated 1939 season led by Head Coach Homer Norton is Texas A&M’s last national title.  The
AP recognized Norton’s team that finished the season 11-0.  The Aggies shutout 6 opponents including a 20-0 whitewashing of
the Longhorns.
Texas A&M 12th Man tradition:  The Aggie fan base is referred to as the 12th Man and is counted on to provide support to the 11
players on the field.  The unique tradition began in 1922 and still plays an active role today.

Leading Aggies Revival
TA&M QB Jerrod Johnson had a breakout season

performance against Texas that saw him pass for
342 yards and 4 TD's while also adding 97 yards
on the ground.  For the season, Johnson threw for
3,579 yards and 30 TD's vs. only 7 INT's.  Johnson
is also quite a threat on the ground after gaining
