ground.  Along with impressive
stats, Luck helped to deliver
some important wins for the
program as under his guidance,
Stanford defeated UCLA, USC
and Notre Dame in 2009.

Bowl win, Stanford football players have had
much to cheer about recently.  The Cardinal is
now preparing to play Oklahoma State in the
Fiesta Bowl
Stanford Cardinal Football Facts and History
  • First football season: Stanford played its first football game in 1891 with no coach and posted a 3-1 record.
  • Years without football: Following the 1905 season, football was dropped at Stanford University and was replaced by rugby from 1906-
    1917.  The 1918 season was cancelled due to WW I.  The university also backed away from the sport during WW II and did not play the
    1943, '44 and '45 seasons.
  • Most Stanford coaching wins: The legendary coaching figure Glenn "Pop" Warner has directed the most victories from the Stanford
    sidelines.  In 9 seasons as head coach (1924-32), Warner posted a 71-17-8.
  • Stanford National Championships - 1926: The University posted a 10-0 record and won the Pacific Coast Conference.  Stanford earned
    a National Championship from the Dickinson Rankings which was an authoritative poll at the time that analyzed team records and
    strength of schedule.  Stanford edged out the Naval Academy for national championship honors.
  • First Rose Bowl appearance: Stanford played in its first Rose Bowl in 1902 and fell to Michigan 49-0.
  • Stanford total Rose Bowl appearances:  The school has played in 12 Rose Bowls.  The most recent one was the 2000 Rose Bowl that
    saw the university fall to Wisconsin.
  • Stanford University Heisman Trophy Winners: QB Jim Plunkett won the award in 1970.  Plunkett beat out Notre Dame's Joe Theismann
    and Ole Miss' Archie Manning for the award.
  • Stanford players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame:  The Cardinal football program has three individuals enshrined in Canton.  They
    include John Elway, James Lofton and Ernie Nevers.
  • Home Stadium: Stanford Stadium which was built in 1921,  seats 50,000.
  • Top Rival: The Stanford vs. Cal Rivalry is one of college football's most heated.  The annual rivalry game is referred to as "The Game."

  • First appearance: 1901 season, a 49-0 loss to Michigan
  • First victory: Following the 1927 season, a 7-6 win over
    Pittsburgh.
  • Most consecutive appearances: (3) following the 1933, '34
    and '35 seasons.
  • Last appearance: 2000, following the 1999 season.  The
    Cardinal fell to Wisconsin 17-9
  • Overall Stanford Rose Bowl record: 5-6-1
