Was Smith Cool-er than Breese? Drew Brees passed for 462 yards and four touchdowns, but the 49ers' Alex Smith had the better game. Based on the Total Quarterback Rating for both players, Smith finished with a 78.1 Total Quarterback Rating, while Brees was at 62.0, which is only slightly above an average score of 50. Brees' score was dragged down by the fact he threw two interceptions and was sacked three times. It also didn't help that he completed only three of nine passes that traveled 15 or more yards. Did SF make the Saints a Sad Sack? Pat Yasinskas, who covers the NFC South for ESPN, has come up with some interesting stats on the Saints-49ers game. "As expected, the Saints blitzed Alex Smith a lot. In the first three quarters, the Saints sent four or fewer rushers on only nine of Smith's 33 dropbacks (27.3) peer cent. But in the fourth quarter, the Saints cut back on the blitz and sent four or fewer rushers on 50 per cent of Smith's dropbacks and he burned them. In the fourth quarter, Smith completed all six of his passes, including the game winner."...

A Historic Day in Candlestick Park The 49ers became the first team in NFL history to score two lead-changing touchdowns in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter in a playoff game. Smith, who got a $1 million bonus for appearing in a playoff game. accounted for three of his team's four touchdowns, throwing two to Davis and one to Michael Crabtree and adding a 28-yard scoring run down the Saints sideline. He was 24-of-42 passes for 299 yards and had a 103.2 quarterback rating.
