- Pitt Panthers basketball is born when the first team is fielded in 1905
- Pitt lost their first game, 34 to 14 against Wooster
- Dr. H.C. Carlson became Pitt's head coach in 1922 at the age of 23. Over the next 31 years
he notched 2 mythical national championships and 367 wins.
- F Charley Hyatt became the Panthers first Men's Basketball All-America. Hyatt earned All-
America honors in the two subsequent seasons as well. Hyatt's Panthers posted a sparkling 60-7 overall record from 1927-30. Nicknamed the "Clipper," he twice led the nation in scoring during his collegiate career
- The Panthers made the lone Final Four appearance in school history (1940) at the inaugural
NCAA Tournament played in Madison, Wisconsin. The Panthers defeated North Carolina in the semifinals but fell to the hometown Wisconsin Badgers in the championship game.
- The Panthers played in the first-ever nationally televised basketball game at famed Madison
Square Garden against Fordham. The Panthers defeated the Rams, 57-37
- In January 1973, The Panthers climbed into the national rankings for the first time in school
history, earning No. 17 AP and No. 13 UPI rankings. A 22-game win streak later in the season would propel them to a then school-record No. 7 ranking in the polls.
- In March 1988, Pitt records one of the most significant wins in its history when the Panthers
edge Syracuse, 85-84, at the Carrier Dome and claim their first ever undisputed Big East Championship.
