University of Notre Dame Basketball Facts

  • Notre Dame basketball first tipped off in 1898 when Frank Herring's squad completed a 1-2 season.

  • Although Notre Dame has never won the NCAA tournament, the Fighting Irish have been named national
    champions twice.   The Helms Foundation named Notre Dame national champs in 1927 following Notre
    Dame's 19-1 season.  Helms anointed  Notre Dame national champs again in 1936 after Notre Dame
    posted a 22-2-1

  • It was the Notre Dame basketball team that finally ended UCLA's 88-game winning streak in 1974.  The
    Irish upended the Bruins by a 71-70 score.

  • The Notre Dame basketball team made it's lone NCAA Final Four appearance in 1978.

  • Digger Phelps is the all-time leader in coaching wins at Notre Dame.  Phelps' Irish basketball teams
    posted a 393-197 overall record during Phelps' coaching tenure that spanned from 1971 to 1991.  Phelps
    won two National Coach of the Year awards following the 1974 and 1987 seasons.
