- The franchise's actual nickname is the Knickerbockers.
The name is a reflection of the Original Dutch Settlers that helped found New York.
- the franchise was founded in 1946 and is one of just two
teams (Boston Celtics the other) of the original NBA that are still located in their original city.
- The team's first game was a November 1, 1946 contest
against the Toronto Huskies in the team's Maple Leaf Gardens. New York won its inaugural game 68-66.
- The franchise has won two NBA championships. Those
titles came in 1970 and 1973 when Red Holzman's squads featured stars such as Bill Bradley, Walt Frazier, Dave DeBusschere, Jerry Lucas and Earl Monroe starring at Madison Square Garden.
- The arrival of Patrick Ewing brought hopes of more Knicks
championships when he was selected by New York with the first pick of the 1985 NBA Draft. Although Ewing enjoyed a tremendous career in New York through the 2000 season, the Knicks were unable to capture an NBA title with him there. However, the club did gain NBA Eastern Conference titles in 1994 and 1999 while Ewing was on board.
