North Carolina Tar Heel Championship Seasons in Review
1957 National Champs:  Head coach Frank McGuire led UNC to its first NCAA
Tournament Title with a win against the Wilt Chamberlin led Kansas Jayhawks.
Lennie Rosenbluth was the star of the 1957 squad. His 27 points and 8.6
rebounds a game in regular season play led the Tar Heels to the ACC
championship and beyond.
1982 National Champs:  Michael Jordan, Sam Perkins and James Worthy led the
way for the Tar Heels championship run in 1992.  Freshman Michael Jordan hit the
winning jumper against Georgetown in the championship game as UNC won 63
to 62.  UNC began and finished the year ranked No. 1 in the country in the
Associated Press poll. In fact, Carolina held the No. 1 ranking for all but five weeks
in 1981-82. The Tar Heels posted a 32-2 record.  North Carolina's only losses
were to Wake Forest at home when and at Virginia.
1993 National Champs: The Tar Heels finished the season 34-4, winning 18
consecutive games at one point. UNC defeated Michigan for the national title by a
77 to 71 score in what will always be remembered for Michigan's Chris Weber
inopportune time out.  The victory was Coach Dean Smith's 2nd national
championship and also avenged a loss to the Wolverines earlier in the season.
Leading the charge for North Carolina was Center Eric Montross and senior
forward George Lynch on the inside and shooting guard Donald Williams provided
the spark from the outside.
2005 National Champs:  UNC went 33-4 under the direction of Tar Heel 2nd year
coach Roy Williams.  Although, North Carolina had a dominating season
throughout,  the season began with an upset loss to Santa Clara.  UNC would
rebound by winning the ACC before defeating  No. 1 ranked Illinois for the national
title.  North Carolina was led by seniors Jawad Williams, Jackie Manuel and Melvin
Scott.  UNC led the country in scoring and assists and held the opposition to 40
percent shooting.
The Traditions of North Carolina Tar
Heel Blue Basketball Jerseys
According to the University of North Carolina's
official website, here's how the famous colors of
North Carolina's basketball uniforms originated.

Origin of the University Colors

As symbols of unity among Carolina students,
alumni, and fans, the school colors of light blue and
white were first used around 1800 to distinguish
between members of the Dialectic and
Philanthropic Literary Societies. Throughout the
nineteenth century, students were required to be
members of either the Di or the Phi. The Di's color
was light blue, and the Phi's was white.

At University commencements, balls, and other
social events, the student officials, managers, and
marshals wore the color of their society, blue or
white. Because the Chief Marshal or Chief Ball
Manager represented the whole student body, not
just his society, he wore both colors.

When the University fielded its first intercollegiate
athletic teams in 1888, the question of what colors
to wear had already been answered. Light blue and
white had come to symbolize membership in the
University, not in a single society.

Light blue and white have been considered the
University's colors for more than a century. With the
tradition so firmly established, a popular bumper
sticker states that God must be a Tar Heel because
he made the sky Carolina Blue!
Key Figures in North Carolina's
National Championship Tradition
Michael Jordan:  While wearing North
Carolina jersey No. 23 as a freshman,
Jordan played an instrumental role in helping
UNC to capture the 1982 championship.
Jordan went on to win multiple NBA
championships while gaining legendary
status as perhaps the best ever to play the
game.
