Earvin Johnson's Michigan State Career
Earvin Johnson is a native of East Lansing, MI. After a prolific high school career that
saw one sportswriter label him as "Magic", Earvin Johnson elected to stay home and
wear a Michigan State Spartans basketball jersey.
As a freshman, Johnson averaged 17.0 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.4 assists while
leading Michigan State to a 25-5 record and a Big Ten Conference title. After making
it to the NCAA regional finals his freshman season, Johnson's sophomore generated
championship results and took the NCAA Basketball Tournament to a new level.
Incorporating a strategy that featured Johnson at the point guard and forward
positions, Johnson led Michigan State to the NCAA Finals in 1979. The heralded
match up was against a Indiana State University team featuring sensational forward
Larry Bird. In a highly anticipated NCAA championship game, the Michigan State
Spartans won 75–64, and Johnson was voted Most Outstanding Player of the Final
Four. Magic finished his career at Michigan State with 1059 points, 471 rebounds.
