The Chosen One Jake Long is the first overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. This marks the second time that a Michigan player was the first player drafted. The Wolverine preceding Long with that honor was Michigan's Tom Harmon in 1941.

While wearing Michigan Jersey No. 77, Jake Long was a two-time Wolverines team captain and became the first Michigan player to win consecutive Big Ten Offensive Linemen of the Year awards. Long was also a consensus All-American in 2006 and 2007.

Jake Long was a three-year starter at Lapeer (Michigan) East High School. Long was the second player in his high school's history to earn all-state first team honors in football. In baseball Long played first base and graduated from high school as the all time leader in home runs and RBIs. Long garnered national attention from recruiting services. Max Emfinger ranked him as the 5th best offensive tackle in the nation. Insiders.com had him ranked as the 12th best offensive linemen nationally.
