University Nickname Red Raiders
Although the University's nickname is well established, the football team was originally known as the Matadors from 1925 to 1936. The current nickname took hold when Tech visited heavily favored Loyola Marymount for a football game in Los Angeles. While the football team overwhelmed the California team, a LA sports writer commented on the visiting team's flashy red uniforms when he called the "Matadors a red raiding team." The name caught on and the rest as they say is history.
