Florida Gators National Championship Seasons
|
After flirting with national prominence throughout part of the 1980s and early 90s, Florida Gator fans finally had the opportunity to wear Florida Gators national championship t-shirts and gear in 1996 The key component of Florida gaining national championship pedigree was the arrival of Steve Spurrier as hed coach in 1990. The former Heisman Trophy winning Florida Gators QB implemented an offensive attack that took college football by storm. The “Fun-N-Gun” offense complimented by crunching Gators defense, helped the Gators to bask in the sun while winning five-SEC titles (1991,1993-96) and a consensus 1996 national title. Even though the Gators had scored 50 or more points six times while starting the 1996 season with a 10-0 record, national championship hopes seemed lost when Florida State nipped Florida 24-21 in Tallahassee. However, after spanking Alabama in the SEC title game, the third ranked Gators accepted an invitation to play the top ranked Seminoles in the Sugar Bowl. A 52-20 thumping of FSU not only provided great payback to Bobby Bowden’s squad, but Florida surged to the top of the polls for a unanimous national championship. After making his mark with Utah, coach Urban Myer brought his coaching excellence to Gator land. Not only did Myer lift the Gators to levels not achieved since Steve Spurrier's departure, but he stunned the college football world by leading Florida to an upset win over Ohio State in the BCS Championship game. The Gators conquest gave Gator fans their 2nd chance in 10 years to wear Florida Gators national championship gear
