University of Colorado Football Facts and History
Colorado first began playing football in 1890.
Folsom Field is home to the Colorado football program.  The horseshoe shaped stadium
opened in 1924.  The facility was originally known as Colorado Stadium for its first two
decades.  The stadium was renamed in 1944 in honor of former legendary Buffs coach
Fred Folsom.
Most CU coaching wins:  Former Head Coach Bill McCartney (1982-94) holds the mark for
the most victories in Colorado football history.  In his 13 years, McCartney logged a 93-55-5
record including the 11 wins earned during the school's 1990 national championship
season.
100 years after CU football first began, the university claimed its first national
championship.  Head Coach Bill McCartney's squad posted an 11-1-1 record during the
championship campaign.  The Buffs only loss of the season was an opening game 23-22
loss to Illinois.   The team's one tie was against Tennessee.  Colorado put an exclamation
on their season with an Orange Bowl will following the 1990 season.  While the AP awarded
Colorado their national title, the UPI granted national championship honors to Georgia Tech.
Colorado Hiesman Trophy winners:  The Buffaloes program boasts the 1994 Heisman
winner.  Running back Rashaan Salaam gained the top individual award
CU Heisman Trophy Winner Rashaan Salaam
Salaam won the 1994 Heisman Trophy after
rushing for a school-record 2,055 yards and
24 TD's.  Salaam's performance helped
spark the Buffaloes to an 11-1 record
including a Fiesta Bowl victory over Notre
Dame.  Four consecutive 200-yard games
helped Salaam to gain momentum in the
Heisman race that also featured a strong
push from Penn State's Ki-Jana Carter.

The exclamation mark on Salaam's Heisman
campagin was a sensational effort in CU's
win over Texas that saw him generate a
school record with 362 yards of total offense.

Salaam beat Carter by 842 points in the
Heisman voting and left for the NFL with a
year of eligibility remaining.  The former
Colorado RB was drafted in the first round of
the 1995 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears
with the 21st pick.
