Army Supporters Root for the A-Team

ARMY: THE BLACK KNIGHT, BLACKJACK & THE A-TEAM
Quite a cadre of mascots supports the Academy’s athletic efforts. Since the Army mascot is the mule,
the animal has been a fixture on the team’s sidelines since 1899. Typically the real mules only make
appearances at home games and the Navy game, while a costumed mule named Blackjack serves
above and beyond the call of duty by going to all games.
While the mule mascot honors the Army's past reliance on the animal for transporting guns, supplies
and ammunition, the Black Knight is the Academy’s mascot. He appears at ball games in full battle
dress, intimidating opponents with menacing appearance.
Although the television program has long been out of production, the A-Team also serves as mascots for
the academy. A-Man first appeared several decades ago while A-Woman joined the team as his partner
in the mid 1990s. In Lone Ranger style, both A-Teamers wear masks over their eyes.
“A-Man was originally the unsanctioned mascot for the cadets, kind of an-anti mascot, an anti-hero,”
said Noel Davis, who guides the mascots as the Academy’s Rebel Rouser coach. "There was an aura of
mystery surrounding him. You never knew when he was going to appear or from where. The tradition
was totally cadet driven.”
Eventually A-Man joined the academy’s ranks as a sanctioned mascot, but despite his being officially
pulled into the ranks, the A-Team still packs more motivational punch than the other mascots.
"We have our little skits and I watch a lot of WWF Wrestling for new ideas, said 1998
A-Man Ed Boom. "We just go out there and act crazy and get the crowd fired up."
