Arizona State Retired Football Jerseys Numbers: A Family Affair
|
The expression "like father, like son," is a perfect description of honored ASU football players that have had their jersey numbers retired.
Wilford "Whizzer" White starred for the Sun Devils from (1947-50) in a career that was capped by his leading the nation in rushing and all-purposed running his senior year. When White's No. 33 was retired following his 1951 graduation, it became the first one to receive that honor.
Following Bobby Mulgado's No. 27 being retired in 1958, the school's third jersey number was "Whited" out when Wilford White's son Danny had his No. 11 number set aside. While Mulgado was a national force in punt returning and scoring (1954-57), Danny White was a quarterback from (1971-73).
Danny White's jersey was retired in 1997, the same year that he became the first ASU player to be elected into the College Football Hall of Fame. Prior to starring for the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, White led the Sun Devils to a 32-4 record in three seasons.
