Perhaps no individual award receives the attention and debate than the highly coveted Heisman Trophy. After months of media speculation and hype the award is presented each December to college football’s most outstanding player. No matter what fame and honor that a winner of the Heisman Trophy may later achieve, he will first and foremost be known as a Heisman Trophy winner. The John W. Heisman Memorial Trophy was presented for many years by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York. However financial pressures following 9/11 forced the club's closing in 2002. The trophy is now presented by the Yale Club which has maintained the New York tradition. First known as the D.A.C. Trophy when it was first presented in 1935, the award was renamed in 1936 for Heisman. The honoree was the first athletic director of the Downtown Athletic Club and was well known in college football circles after playing for Penn and Brown and then coaching at Auburn, Oberlin, Clemson, Akron, Penn, Rice, Washington and Jefferson and Georgia Tech. Throughout this site, you'll find many great stories, profiles and facts that surround the Heisman Trophy.
